Working Internationally

UK Artists performing abroad

If you’re gig-ready, tour-experienced in the UK and with a reasonable profile and track record, you may be thinking about gigging in the EU as a next career step.

The viability of touring in the EU has of course changed after Brexit, and this is still achievable – with a considerable amount of planning, time and expense. Approach this with a long-term mindset, focus your initial visits to one country or two/three adjoining territories, and as with all your UK bookings, take the time to build up relationships with programmers and presenters.

The main difference between touring pre-Brexit and now is that you now need to consider the entry requirements and the conditions for working in each individual country or state that you are considering touring to, rather than the EU as a whole.

Always go to the information source at gov.uk and the relevant country governing body for the most up to date requirements, including any Covid entry restrictions. Don’t rely on 3rd party information; however, helpful guidance is available at Help Musicians, Musicians’ Union, and ISM.

Jazz North offers tailored touring advice to artists on our Northern Line scheme.

Booking overseas artists to play in the north

If you are a promoter based in the North of England and you wish to book overseas artists in your programme, you will need to check the UK entry requirements for each individual performer and identify any paperwork you need to provide in order for them to undertake paid work in the UK.

Depending on their country of origin, this may involve temporary worker visas, Certificates of Sponsorship, or Letters of Invitation. Jazz North is a registered Sponsor and can apply for Certificates of Sponsorship on your behalf. Please be aware that Jazz North is only able to support a limited number of artists to visit the UK each year and the gig or tour supported must meet certain conditions.

Jazz North charges promoters an administrative fee of £30 per artist for each Certificate issued.
